How to unlock your musical creativity

Do you randomly play notes when you improvise, and wouldn’t you rather be able to tell a story and improvise in a way that sounds musical to your ears?

Would you like to be able to play along with your favorite music by ear without the need for sheet music?

Are you frustrated by trying to memorize licks and ladders and trying to place them in the context of a song?

Wouldn’t you rather be able to weave melodies effortlessly through the chord changes instead?

Sound familiar? You are not the only one.

It isn’t at all difficult to recognize music by ear and improvise spontaneously whenever you hear music. The key is to understand how to study music in the first place.

What you need is a creative daily practice routine that helps you to connect your ear to your instrument and shows you how to discover your own musical creativity.

The Introduction to Melodic Improvising teaches you a simple method for playing your own melodies over chords and for helping you to understand music by ear.

Learn to play music like having a conversation: effortlessly, naturally and with room for your own input.

My playing has improved.

I have loved and enjoyed it immensely, and it has enabled me to think and more importantly ‘feel’ about my music making in a new and exciting way. It has been a musical transformation for me. Even my long suffering wife and daughter have commented how much my playing has changed and improved. Praise indeed!

Playing what I hear and feel.

I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn the art of improvisation. I am now more connected to how harmony flows through the major scale and I am making progress on my instrument as far as hearing ideas in my head and executing them on the guitar.

WHAT IS THE INTRODUCTION TO MELODIC IMPROVISING?

Inside this course

Video tutorials with instructions, examples and assignments

15 video lessons (10 – 15 min each) with very clear homework assignments, which tell you exactly what to practice. You can watch each video as many times as you like at your own convenience. There are mastery level exercises for more experienced improvisers.

Interactive practice audio and video

With additional audio tracks and videos, including those from the Improvise with Jelske series, you can actively practise the assignments with me. This makes studying playful, interactive and musical, as if we were working together.

High quality jam tracks in popular styles

You’ll get access to more than 400 jam tracks from Improvise for Real. These jam tracks – in different popular music styles like pop, rock, jazz, funk – are fun to practice with and provide an organized, progressive harmonic study path. All jam tracks are (downloadable) mp3 files.

I now feel like a real musician.

This is what proper musicians do! I thought I would never be able to do that as I have spent so many years reading parts. This is a new way of playing for me. It’s funny, I now feel like a real musician, like I am not faking it anymore.

Changes one's perspective to improv.

I would definitely recommend this course to others who are seeking to acquire the skills of jazz improv. The tonal approach, among other things, opens up great possibilities and changes one's perspective to improv.

A word about you

This programme is suitable for you if you want to learn to understand music by ear and are willing to practise actively and with curiosity. You don’t need to be fast or know everything already, but you do need to be open to a different way of working than just playing from sheet music.

This programme is less suitable if you are mainly looking for fast tricks, quick licks or ready-made solos to copy. It is also less suitable if you do not have the time or space to practise regularly.

Any questions?

You need time to repeat the exercises. Ideally every day, but at least 3 times a week (approx. 1 hour). This will enable you to build momentum.

Beginners are welcome! I advise you to choose for private coaching as well, as I will then be able to help you with the personal hurdles every beginning improvisor experiences.

In order to understand the follow-on courses, it is important you master the foundations of the IFR method. The Introduction to Melodic Improvising helps you build a solid foundation for all of the follow-on courses. Many experienced improvisors have done the introduction course before and experienced great benefits.

I’d recommend you to ask help from a great teacher in order to learn how to play your instrument. Please feel free to come back later to join this course.

Talent is overrated…

Many players encounter these issues. It says nothing about your talent or musicality.

What does make a difference is how you practise and what structure you use to progress. With the Introduction to Melodic Improvisation, you will learn how music works, develop proven strategies for recognising music by ear, and discover how to jam and improvise with confidence.
